Former UI Leader from Waterloo Out as President at University of Illinois

A former University of Iowa official has resigned as president at University of Illinois.

Michael Hogan, the former provost and a finalist for the president position at five years ago, has resigned as president of University of Illinois after two years.

He will stay on until July when Bob Easter will take over as interim president.

Hogan had come under fire for his leadership style at Illinois and had conflicts with faculty. It didn't help when his long time aide, Lisa Troyer, resigned after being accused of posing as a faculty senator to attempt to sway the senate. Troyer served under him at University of Iowa, and later when he was president at University of Connecticut.

Hogan, who is originally from Waterloo, was one of four finalist for the University of Iowa presidency in 2006. The Iowa Board of Regents ended that search without choosing a president, which led to votes of no confidence in the regents by faculty, staff and student groups. Some on campus lobbied for Hogan to get the job, and students created a Facebook group called Hogan's Heroes as a show of support.

Current UI president Sally Mason ultimately landed the position following a second search.
