Mother Allegedly Helped Daughter Steal from Iowa City Hy-Vee Drugstore

A mother and daughter from Iowa City allegedly worked together to steal merchandise from the local for about a year before getting caught, according to a police complaint released on Thursday.

Police say Pamela Sue Calkins, 57, of 2729 Wayne Ave., who was employed at the Drugstore location at 310 N. First Ave., would allow her daughter Amanda Denise Calkins, 27, of 931 Cottonwood Ave., to pass through her aisle with a cart full of merchandise, while only ringing up a few items and then she would leave with the rest without paying. 

This went on for about a year, police said.

Both women face fourth degree theft charges, which are serious misdemeanors.

Police worked with staff using security footage to identify $302 worth of goods not paid for, but the total amount was likely much higher, according to police.

The charges are dated back to Sept. 21, 2011, according to the police complaint.
