[UPDATE] Police Cancel Hawk Alert After Locating Man "Who May Have a Gun" Near Campus in Iowa City

University of Iowa police advised people to stay in their rooms until further notice, but canceled the warning 45 minutes later after taking the man into custody. An Iowa City police lieutenant says it is related to a domestic violence incident.

University of Iowa police canceled a Hawk Alert late Monday evening after locating a man reported to have a gun near campus.

Police issued the initial report at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday advising people that police were looking for a man who may have a weapon near campus. They canceled it 45 minutes later via a Tweet, saying the suspect had been located.

"HAWK ALERT: Cancel the Hawk Alert. Man with weapon was located," the Tweet stated. A recorded Hawk Alert followed saying, "The threat to campus has ended."

The man was found off campus and taken into custody, according to UI.

At about 10:30 a Hawk Alert recording stated, "This is University of Iowa police chief Chuck Green. Please listen to this important Hawk Alert. Nov. 14, 2011, 10:25 p.m., police are looking for a man reported to have a weapon near campus. Everyone should remain in their rooms until further notice."

The UI also had a banner warning along the top of its website homepage that said a man was reported to have a weapon near campus.

A dispatcher with UI police, who declined to give her full name citing department policy, said a man "who may have a gun," was reported near the west side of campus along Newton Road.

Iowa City police Lt. Mike Brotherton told the Daily Iowan that the alert is related to an alleged domestic dispute, in which a male subject told a female subject that he has a gun and threatened to harm the female and himself.

“I don’t know if that’s something that’s going to be a threat to others right now,” Brotherton told the UI student newspaper.

The UI police dispatcher said she did not have additional details at this time, and Iowa City police referred questions to the university.

The Hawk Alert is a message system that blasts advisories via telephone, email and text to students, faculty, staff and others.
