Iowa City Landlord Accused of Peeping Pleads Not Guilty, Trial Scheduled for February

The landlord faces eleven counts of invasion of privacy.


An Iowa City landlord accused of using peepholes to spy on some of his female tenants pleaded not guilty last week and his trial has been scheduled for early next year.

The trial for Elwyn Gene Miller, 63, of Iowa City has been scheduled for Feb. 26 of next year. He previously waived his right for a speedy trial and pleaded not guilty on Nov. 29 according to online court records.

Miller is accused of eleven counts of invasion of privacy for peeping at the female residents. He was arrested a month ago on Oct. 31 after one of his residents reported him spying on her in the bathroom at one of his rental properties at 639 S. Lucas Street.

In this incident Miller was accused of watching the woman while nude in the bathroom through a hole near the ventilation fan in the ceiling, according to police criminal complaints.

Lee Hermiston of the Press-Citizen reports that further investigation by police of the properties Miller manages unveiled peepholes in bedrooms or bathrooms at three other units at the Lucas Street property. Miller is also accused of spying on another woman at a building he owns at 1024 E. Burlington Street.

Invasion of privacy is a serious misdemeanor charge. If convicted of all counts, Miller could spend up to 11 years in prison.
