Recovering from Drugs and Alcohol, Man Spreads Faith on Walk Across America

Dan Reinke of Forest Lake, MN, is walking across America to inspire people to turn back to their faith to make the world a better place.

You may have seen Dan Reinke walking along the road, although you likely didn't know at whom you were looking.

Equipped only with a white sun hat and a big back pack, Reinke, 25, is walking his way across America. After 55-plus days and 1,500 miles, his trek brought him to Iowa.

"I've seen what practicing Christians can do to the people around them," Reinke told KCCI. "I mean it just spiderwebs. It affects everyone around them."

Reinke, who is from Forest Lake, MN, decided to go on the walk after battling drugs and alcohol as a way to inspire Christians to renew their faith in God and practice what he preaches and hopefully make the world a better place, he said.

Reinke started in Seaside, OR, and hopes to reach the Atlantic Ocean, likely in Virginia, he told the Ottumwa Courier. On Monday, he was walking through backroads in Iowa and met up with the Courier in Pleasantville, which is about 30 minutes southeast of Des Moines.

The journey has encountered hail, heat and rain, Reinke is averaging 30 miles per day, he told the Courier.

He is walking most of the trip, but has accepted rides to a campground or place to rest for the night when it gets late, he said.

"It's been amazing how people have been so helpful," Reinke said.
