The ordinance, already recently watered down by exceptions for certain venues, may be challenged by a petition spearheaded by two individuals associated with the Union Bar and Martinis.
The controversial 21-only ordinance battle could be back in the news again soon. Lee Hermiston of the Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that Josh Ecreg, general manager of Martinis, and George Withoff, owner of the Union Bar, have expressed interest to City Clerk Mariann Karr that they would like to petition the city of Iowa City government to overturn the ordinance, on the books since 2010. Iowa City's 21-only ordinance being challenged (Iowa City Press-Citizen) Karr said the petitioners will have to collect 2,500 signatures to put the issue before the city council, who would then vote on the matter or put it to the voters. Given the current makeup of the council – including Mayor Matt Hayek, who championed 21-only with UI vice president …

Jordan Ramos filed a complaint after she said she was insulted about her weight and banned from dancing on a dance platform with friends.
You've probably heard about the young woman named Jordan Ramos, who says she was banned from dancing on a platform at the Union Bar in Iowa City after bouncers told her she was not pretty enough to dance there and "obviously pregnant." The bar apologized, the city of Iowa City forced the Union to dismantle the platform for safety reasons and just this past weekend there was this colorful protest. There's two good questions from this case, but only room for one poll, although plenty of room in the comment section to discuss both.

In reaction to the perceived discrimination by the Union Bar, protesters stood in solidarity amongst Friday night bar revelers, some of whom weren't fans of the protest.
Following a week of controversy, University of Iowa student Jordan Ramos led a protest rally Friday night against discrimination of all types, specifically sizeism-- a form of discrimination based on body size. The event was held outside the Union Bar where Ramos says she was barred from dancing on a platform by Union bouncers who insulted her appearance, particularly her weight. A story last weekend in the Iowa City Press-Citizen sparked controversy that rippled its way up to several national outlets. Even though the city of Iowa City has ordered the Union to dismantle the offending platform for safety reasons, and the Union's owner has offered Ramos an apology, Ramos decided to carried on with the protest to fight other similar …

Someone didn't tell the Iowa City department of Housing and Inspection Services. Mitchell Schmidt of the Iowa City Press-Citizen is reporting that the department has told the bar to dismantle the platform because it violates city safety code. The Iowa City Housing and Inspection Services department sent a formal violation order to The Union Bar at 121 E. College St. to remove a roughly four-foot square and four foot tall platform that did not meet building code requirements, said Code Enforcement Assistant Jann Ream. “We have gone out, we have …

Jim, I definitely understand your point so I'll drop the word "intelligent" from my previous comment. We don't want to come off as censoring ideas or thoughts here, and what is considered "intelligent" or "stupid", I think we can both agree, is going to vary from person to person. Regardless, comments laced with profanity will still be deleted.   more ›
