Authorities Explore Connection Between Abducted Iowa Girl Kathlynn Shepard and Evansdale Case

A massive search is underway for Kathlynn Shepard, 15, in Webster County, after authorities said she and another girl were abducted Monday.

As a search for an abducted Iowa girls stretches into its third day, authorities said they are looking for any connection to the still-unsolved murder and kidnapping cases of Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins of Evansdale. Lyric, 10, and her cousin Elizabeth, 8, went missing last July. Their bodies were discovered in the Seven Bridges Wilderness Area of Bremer County in December, and the hunt for their killer is ongoing. Authorities said Michael J. Klunder, 42, the suspect in Monday's abduction of Kathlynn Shepard, 15, and another girl in Webster County, was found dead of self-inflicted wounds Monday night at a rural property northeast of Dayton. Iowa City School Board Turns Down Offer of Armed Officers in Schools. For Now

School board members cited a need for more information and worries about future funding of the officers as reasons for putting decision on hold.

The Iowa City School Board wanted a few more answers before joining up with the Iowa City Police Department to bring armed community resource officers into its schools. At its Tuesday night meeting, the board voted unanimously to not pursue a federal grant that would have partially funded the addition of two community resource officers dedicated to the school district, positions that would have been similar to the officer already in place in the Iowa City Downtown District. This despite the fact that the Iowa City City Council voted last week to approve the application for the grant. Their reason: remaining questions about the nature of the positions, especially on how to pay for them after the grants expired. Board drops plan for armed …

Fire Dept.: Sprinkler System Puts Out Fire at Iowa City Retirement Community

A sprinkler system prevented a fire from spreading at Legacy Pointe Retirement Community, the Iowa City Fire Department said. They said the fire started in the laundry room

A minor fire that started this morning in the laundry room of the Legacy Pointe Active Retirement Community was kept that way by the building's sprinkler system, extinguishing it before it could cause more serious damage.  According to the Iowa City Fire Department, the fire department received an alert of a fire at Legacy Pointe, 1020 S. Scott Boulevard, at 2:00 a.m. from fire alarms within the building. Crews that arrived on scene encountered light smoke in the first flower hallway that appeared to have been generated from the laundry room. Upon further inspection, Iowa City firefighters found a plastic bucket containing cleaning rags that had caught fire in the laundry room. The fire, however, had fortunately already been extinguished …

University of Iowa PD: UI Student Arrested After Running Naked Outside Burge Hall

The student was arrested and charged with "simulated intoxication" and assault on a peace officer after allegedly spitting on the officer following his arrest.

A University of Iowa student hailing from Keokuk was arrested and charged over the weekend after a University of Iowa police officer reported spotting him running in the nude outside Burge Residence Hall. According to University of Iowa PD criminal complaints, Andrew Jacob Kline, 20, of Iowa City was seen by a university security guard running naked outside the University of Iowa dormitory on Saturday at 1:48 a.m. When Kline was stopped by an officer, he allegedly had slow mumbled speech, dilated pupils, and was "saying off the wall comments that didn't make sense," according to the complaint. Kline allegedly said "(Expletive) you" to one of the arresting officers and spit on his pants and boots. Kline's roommate reportedly told officers …

A massive search is underway for Kathlynn Shepard, 15, in Webster County, after authorities said she and another girl were abducted Monday.

A massive search is underway for Kathlynn Shepard, 15, in Webster County after authorities said she and another girl were abducted Monday. Authorities said a suspect, Michael J. Klunder, 42, was found dead Monday night at a rural property northeast of Dayton. He was on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. Authorities said they suspect he offered Shepard and a 12-year-old girl a ride in his red Toyota Tundra pickup as they got off a school bus just before 4 p.m. Monday. Investigators said the 12-year-old was able to escape and ran to a nearby home after the girls were taken to an agricultural facility southeast of Dayton. Shepard, however, remains missing. She is 5'6" and 160 pounds. She has blond hair and blue eyes, as well as braces. She was …
