Scott Walker in Iowa: Quid Pro Quo Among Political Pals or 2016 Trial Balloon?

“Truth Squad” plans to rally ahead of Wisconsin governor’s appearance before Polk County Republican activists in West Des Moines Thursday.

Advocacy groups for progressives in Iowa and Wisconsin are holding “Scott Walker Truth Squad” in advance of the Wisconsin governor’s appearance Thursday at a Polk County Republican Fundraiser, one of several of appearances before GOP activists that point to a possible presidential run in 2016. Advisers to Walker say he’s returning a favor to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who hosted a fundraiser in Dubuque, Iowa, for the embattled Wisconsin governor during his 2012 recall election, the Washington Post reported. Even if Walker’s advisers are telling it like it is, and that Walker’s appearance with Branstad is just a little quid pro quo among political friends, the pre-banquet rally by Progress Iowa and One Wisconsin Now is expected to add to the…

Sorry, Jeff, but all you have is divisive language. Saying Walker is controversial just because you want people who don't know him to think he is doesn't make him so in the least. He is only "divisive" because he is doing things you disagree with. The guy not only won election, he won the recall vote when he had massive union money against him making all kinds of divisive and bogus claims to try …   more ›

Student Profile: On the Value of Pushing Through the Pain

City High senior Mohamed Traore runs hurdles in track, which is appropriate, because clearing hurdles appears to be what he enjoys most in life.

I am continuing my series on Iowa City Patch where I try to get into the schools and talk to students about their experiences and have them talk about their passions and interests and future plans in their own voice. For this week in honor of graduation, I am finishing up with profiles I did on students from City High. I hope to expand this project next year to include more schools and even more students so stay tuned, and if you have any non senior students to recommend for my profiles drop me a line at stephen.schmidt@patch.com. Previous Profiles: For this profile I spoke with Mohamed Traore, a City High senior who says he will be running track for the University of Iowa next fall. This interview was before Traore was a member of the …

Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.   1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try…

Hawkeye Recruit Peter Jok Named Parade All-American

The Iowa shooting guard recruit from West Des Moines Valley continues to pick up accolades for his bounce back senior season.

Peter Jok's senior season didn't end the way we wanted, with a loss to West Des Moines Dowling preventing a trip to state. However, his post season is going pretty well. Months after being named the Mr. Basketball recipient for the state of Iowa, Jok, a 6 foot 6 inch guard was named to Parade's 2013 All-American list. The list was released by Parade this Saturday. After an injury shortened high school career, Jok made up for lost time in his senior season shooting a blistering 42 percent from 3-point range and hit at a 92.6 percent clip from the free-throw line. This shooting proficiency led to Jok averaging 23.6 points per game. He is expected to compete for playing time as a freshman on a Hawkeye team refreshingly loaded with quality …

Authorities Explore Connection Between Abducted Iowa Girl Kathlynn Shepard and Evansdale Case

A massive search is underway for Kathlynn Shepard, 15, in Webster County, after authorities said she and another girl were abducted Monday.

As a search for an abducted Iowa girls stretches into its third day, authorities said they are looking for any connection to the still-unsolved murder and kidnapping cases of Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins of Evansdale. Lyric, 10, and her cousin Elizabeth, 8, went missing last July. Their bodies were discovered in the Seven Bridges Wilderness Area of Bremer County in December, and the hunt for their killer is ongoing. Authorities said Michael J. Klunder, 42, the suspect in Monday's abduction of Kathlynn Shepard, 15, and another girl in Webster County, was found dead of self-inflicted wounds Monday night at a rural property northeast of Dayton. Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier authorities …

Nodo Owner Excited About Downtown Foot Traffic for New Location

Asklof said he hopes the Downtown Nodo location will open by August with much of the same menu that has garnered fans for the North Dodge location.

Nodo owner Bryan Asklof says that the new downtown location, slated to replace the departing Pizza on Dubuque, will feature more of the same formula that has made Nodo a steady success despite being attached to an Ace Hardware location a long walk away from downtown. More, as in more footspace, longer hours, and over twice as many seats for diners. The same, as in the same menu (with a potential for a few additional tweaks) of coffee, cookies, and above all, wraps and sandwiches that have made Nodo a repeat destination for fans.  Asklof said he isn't worried about the downtown location taking away from his fellowing on the northside. In fact, the location next to Ace will remain open with its current configuration, with a full time …

No More Animal House? Iowa Fraternities and Sororities Seek Exception to Prevent End of Greek System

Fraternities and sororities are asking Iowa City officials to make a special exception so they can continue their traditions of brotherhood and sisterhood.

University of Iowa students flooded city hall last week trying to get a special exception so fraternity and sorority brothers and sisters can continue their Greek tradition. "It is going to be the end of the Greek system at University of Iowa," said Steve Lawler, a supporter of Sigma Pi. "We are a brotherhood of people living together ... The guys live together like family."  At issue is a housing density ordinance Iowa City Council is considering. The rule would treat a fraternity or sorority house like an apartment and limit how many people can live together - one resident per 900 square feet. At least four Greek chapters are interested in building new houses, but if this ordinance passes they'd likely have to scale down.  The students…
