The play "Still" by Jen Silverman arose after a conversation with a UI faculty member about her feelings of loss following the stillbirth of her son.
By Christopher Clair Iowa Now A celebratory moment—the bestowment of the 2013 Yale Drama Series Award—is one that grew out of painful loss and honest conversation between a University of Iowa professor and a student (now alumna) of the Iowa Playwrights Workshop. Still, a play by Jen Silverman, received the aforementioned honor earlier this spring. The production revolves around the lives of three women, each experiencing the trials and tribulations of childbirth. The play interweaves female narratives of unwanted pregnancy, midwifery, and stillborn children. It is that last narrative that involves Elizabeth Heineman, associate professor of history and gender, women’s and sexuality studies in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In…
In this week's adopt a pet of the week we feature a young cat who was saved by a Good Samaritan in Iowa City but who suffered an unfortunate accident along the way. But everything worked out in the end.
This week we introduce you to Crash the cat. Crash is a young and playful cat who was brought in by an Iowa City citizen who had been feeding him near his home. When the man was finally able to lure crash into a carrier, he was on the way to the shelter when he got into a car crash, sending him to the hospital and Crash, bruised and unidentified, to the shelter. Although the shelter initially thought that Crash belonged to the man in the accident, it was later cleared up, once the man was released and recovering from his injuries, that Crash actually had been a stray that he had been bringing to the shelter all along. Now that Crash, too, has healed from his bumps and bruises, he is now available for adoption at the Iowa City Animal …

High-profile kidnappings like those involving Evansdale cousins Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook-Morrissey – and now Kathlynn Shepard – inevitably lead to talk of restoring the death penalty in Iowa.
Emotion-gripped cases like the abduction, sexual assault or murder of a child often provide a platform for capital punishment advocates to argue for reinstatement of capital punishment, abolished in Iowa in 1965. After the Evansdale cousins’ bodies were discovered, a pro-death penalty effort led by state Sen. Kent Sorenson, R-Milo, failed to gather much steam in the just-adjourned Iowa General Assembly, but the question lingers: Is the death penalty an effective deterrent? Capital punishment proponent Noreen Gosch, whose son was kidnapped three decades ago, argues that Iowa has “a kidnapping problem” and the perpetrators of those crimes would be less likely to abduct children in Iowa if they thought they would be executed. Opponents say …

Iowa’s innocence has been abducted again.
I am not a parent. But I doubt I’ll ever read another statement like the one issued by the parents of Kathlynn Shepard without tearing up and feeling like someone karate-kicked me square in the heart: "We would like to thank everybody who took the time from their busy lives to help search for Kathlynn. To see so much love in our community and the surrounding areas is amazing. Thank you for all of your prayers and we hope to have Kathlynn home soon. "We know that members of the public and media want to talk to us. Please understand, the idea of doing an interview is too overwhelming right now. Until Kathlynn is found, we’ll remain focused on our family. …” Stories like these are always tough. But what changed and awoke the latent mother …

Plus, the body of a man last seen on a backhoe in Ames is found, Urbandale residents put out a fire for fun, and a West Des Moines woman welcomes new neighbors by waving a knife and complaining that the grass needs mowed.
With many schools wrapping up classes this week, seniors were feeling frisky. The seniors at Linn-Mar High School in Marion supposedly posted on Craigslist that the high school is for rent. Where are Bluto and Otter when you need them? Frat and sorority houses sometimes seem a little weird, but students say it's not "Animal House" anymore, rather a positive community of brotherhoods or sisterhoods that give back to society. University of Iowa students told Iowa City's council they fear a housing rule change could end their Greek lifestyle. As a show of good faith, a city council member said he didn't see John Belushi in the house. Why are Urbandale residents putting out fires? It was part of the finale of the Urbandale Citizen Fire …

The lone female involved in the robbery presented a note demanding money while brandishing a handgun and pointing it at the bank teller. She then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, according to the release. After collecting witness testimony and following other leads, the Coralville Police Department stopped a white Toyota Sequoia with no license plates and arrested the occupant of …

Hang those S.O.B's! one trial and if convicted its over, no more cost to the tax payer and a length of rope can be used multiple times. These people generally pray upon young, naïve people. if the victims do survive they are the ones that will suffer a life time of wondering why nobody did anything to protect them. But if the perpetrator is dead that is one less of the worst kind of criminal to …   more ›
