The Iowa City Public Library (www.icpl.org) is a Downtown Iowa City hub and also the busiest Library building in the State of Iowa, circulating over 1.5 million items each year. The Library has extensive print, video, audio, and music collections and even checks out art prints. The Library also offers 48 internet computers and extensive access to online databases. Downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks are available for residents of Iowa City, rural Johnson County, Hills and University Heights, and, by contract, residents of the city of Coralville. The Library also offers five meeting rooms for use by community groups.
The Iowa City Public Library was established in 1896 and has served the community from a downtown location ever since. The Library is governed by a semi-autonomous nine member Board of Trustees empowered by state law and city ordinance (Title 11) to set policy, determine goals and objectives, control monies appropriated or given to the Library, and to employ staff. The Library is a city department, Board members are appointed by and principal operating funds approved by the City Council.
The Iowa City Public Library encourages and sustains a literate, informed, and diverse community, is committed to equal accessibility, intellectual freedom, and life-long learning, and provides a community gathering place for meetings and programming for the benefit of the public.
