(Video) Meet Maurice: Sad Eyes, Sweet Dog. Iowa City Patch's Adopt this Pet of the Week. (ADOPTED)

Each week Iowa City Patch profiles a new animal from the Iowa City Animal Shelter who is in need of a good home. This week we meet Maurice, a dog who looks sad but really is a sweetheart.

Chad Mason, animal services assistant at the Iowa City Animal Shelter, introduces us to Maurice, a one-year-old boxer dog that came to the shelter as a stray around one month ago.

Maurice has sad eyes and skinny flanks, and Mason says he is a little too bouncy for some when seen in his kennel. When he gets out in the open, though, he shows his true character, and although he is energetic he is also loving with people and other dogs. Maurice behaves well enough that the shelter often keeps him up front in the waiting room.

Mason said Maurice does have an application in for his adoption from some college students, but it is uncertain if they will go through with it. He said they would have said they would understand it if another person who was more certain about Maurice came and adopted him instead.

For more information on adopting Maurice you can call the Animal Shelter at: (319) 356-5295. Or visit the shelter at 4852 Sand Rd SE.

Adult Weight 53 lbs. Compatible
with Dogs May do fine, recommend a proper introduction Compatible
with Cats Maybe, was interested but also a bit afraid. Best with cats that have lived with dogs before. Recommend supervision initially. Compatible
with Children Over 6 years old - may guard from small children Comments Maurice is a very energetic dog. He is easily distracted in new places and likes to use his nose to explore everything. Maurice also has a sweet, calm side, and once he is properly exercised, he likes to lounge on your lap (or as close to you as possible!) for attention. He loves to be gently, slowly petted and may fall asleep on you once he is really comfortable. Maurice likes chasing toys, doesn't know how to bring them back to you, but will give them up readily. He loves treats too, which makes him an excellent candidate for reward-based training.
