National champion wrestler and Marion native Matt McDonough has been named the University of Iowa's top male athlete and is a candidate for the Big Ten athlete of the year.
University of Iowa officials announced last week that McDonough and women's field hockey player Jessica Barnett, both juniors, were the school's top athletes this year.
McDonough finished this year with a 36-1 record, including 12 pins, and an NCAA championship at 125 pounds. His .962 winning percentage is the fourth best in UI history.
In high school, McDonough won three state championships while sporting a Linn-Mar singlet. He also set school records for most takedowns in a season and tied the school record for most pins in a season. His 151 career wins in high school makes him the second winningest wrestler in Linn-Mar history.
