Hawkeyes Roll Gophers, Northern Iowa Blows Out McNeese State

Iowa 23, Minnesota 7: When the play does the talking (the Gazette)

Iowa played the physical card over and over and over in Saturday’s 23-7 victory over Minnesota before 51,382 fans at TCF Bank Stadium.

Running back Mark Weisman rolled up 147 yards and the Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) outgained the Gophers (4-1, 0-1) 246 yards to 30. That’s the physical card. That’s the backbreaker. That’s the Hawkeyes running to the left and having left tackle Brandon Scherff sit on the Gophers chest. That’s Minnesota, which came into the game averaging 282.25 rushing yards, make fire on a rock of a defense.

Thursday Cyclones' first win provides answers, confidence (Des Moines Register)

Iowa State finally pulled the trigger Thursday night on that pistol offense it uses to various degrees of success.

We finally saw the Aaron Wimberly Express — the speed-of-light tailback about whom everyone has been hearing since the Iowa Western Community College all-American said he was headed to Ames.

He did a lot of everything during a 38-21 victory against Tulsa at H.A. Chapman Stadium, not the least of which was giving a sense of confidence to a team that enters the uncertainty of Big 12 play at home next Thursday against Texas.
