PPEL on Ballot September 10

The Iowa City Community School District will be asking voters to renew the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) for school buildings on September 10th.  The maintenance and repair of District facilities is funded by the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL).

The district has had a voter-approved PPEL for nearly 40 years. At the current rate of $1.34 for each $1,000 of taxable property value, the PPEL brings in $7 million annually. Projects include things such as playgrounds, athletic fields, parking lots, building roofs and windows, painting, furniture and electrical upgrades.  This PPEL expires June 30, 2015.

On Sept. 10, the district will ask the community to reauthorize the PPEL rate of $1.34 for each $1,000 of taxable property value.  This will not increase property taxes, but rather keep the levy at the same level.

The PPEL differs from the School Infrastructure Local Option Tax (SILO) or Secure and Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE). That SAVE funding was reauthorized by voters in the February 2013 Revenue Purpose Statement vote for specific uses of major renovations and the building of new schools.

The PPEL vote will take place at the same time as the school board election on September 10. To find your polling place go to: http://www.johnson-county.com/auditor/voter/schoolprecinct.htm.  The ballot will also include board of education candidates. All election day polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.  Early voting is taking place at the Johnson County Auditors office weekdays from 7:45am-5:30pm.  For more information, visit www.iowacityschools.org.
