Iowa City School Board Approves Land Purchase for Third High School, Two More Elementary Schools

After years in the making, a third comprehensive high school in the Iowa City School District came a little closer to reality last night.

After years of waiting, North Liberty parents likely won't be sure about a third high school being built until the foundations are being laid.

But at least there is some land for those foundations now.

Adam Sullivan of the Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the Iowa City School Board approved the purchase of land for a new high school in the North Liberty area and two new elementary schools.

The corner of Dubuque Street and North Liberty Road is expected to be the site of a new Iowa City Community School District high school.

The School Board on Tuesday also approved land purchases for two new elementary schools: one on American Legion Road in Iowa City and another off North Liberty Road near Coralville. Those are in addition to a property deal approved last month for an elementary school space on Sycamore Street in Iowa City.

So far the Iowa City School District has bought or swapped a total of 107 acres worth of land in order to make way for the four new schools. This one high school, three elementary school plan is part of the total comprehensive facilities master plan that the school board approved last month.

Although both the new high school and one of the new elementary schools are located on North Liberty Road, they will be in different city boundaries, according to Gregg Hennigan of the Gazette. The new high school will be in North Liberty, whereas the new elementary school should eventually be annexed into Coralville.
