Union leader criticizes Branstad on prison funding

Advocates say fewer guards could mean danger for inmates.

Danny Homan, the president of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Iowa Council 61, said Tuesday that a decrease in personnel at Iowa prisons is a threat to guards' and inmates' safety.

Homan said Gov. Terry Branstad needs to “get real” and provide enough money to safely operate prisons.

“Before we have another officer killed and need to add another rock to this monument,” Homan said, standing before a monument dedicated to fallen officers.
