University of Iowa Student from Johnston Nabs Endorsement in Iowa House Race

Jake Highfill is challenging incumbent Rep. Erik Helland, R-Johnston.

A University of Iowa student running for an Iowa House seat has earned an endorsement from a libertarian-leaning group.

The Liberty Iowa Political Action Committee announced 13 legislative endorsements on Tuesday morning, including Republican Jake Highfill, 22, who's running for the GOP nomination in the 39th District, which covers Urbandale, Johnston, and Grimes.

"In the coming weeks, Liberty Iowa will devote significant resources to ensuring that our candidates are successful in their respective primary bids,” Liberty Iowa PAC Director Adil Khan said in a press release. “From activating our extensive network of grassroots volunteers to targeted mailings, each of these candidates will have the full backing of our organization.”

Highfill is challenging Rep. Erik Helland, R-Johnston, in the district's Republican primary. Controversy struck earlier this year when Highfill said Helland offered him a job if he'd drop out of the race. State ethics officials eventually dismissed the case.
