Iowa Woman Who Heckled Paul Ryan Writes About Incident on Salon.com

The protesters gained national headlines for disrupting Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan's first speech in Iowa after being named Mitt Romney's running mate.

Cherie Mortice, a retired 63-year-old retired Des Moines school teacher, wrote a letter to Salon.com identifying herself as one of the women on Monday. Video of the incident is attached to this article.

After the women bum rushed the stage, disrupting the vice presidential candidate's soapbox speech, Ryan chastised the women for not acting respectively as people in Midwestern states like Wisconsin and Iowa are supposed to:

“You know what? It’s funny. It’s funny because Iowans and Wisconsinites, we like to be respectful of one another and peaceful with one another and listen to one another," Ryan said. "These ladies must not be from Iowa and Wisconsin."

This irked Mortice, as she wrote in her letter titled "Yes, Mr. Ryan, I'm from Iowa."

So you understand, Congressman Ryan, and Governor Romney, that when I hear you tell a crowd that you want to ‘help the middle class to prosper’, by cutting off the lifelines these young people need to survive – food stamps, Medicaid, public education and yes, drug treatment, it makes my blood boil. It sends that Iowa nice thing just right out the window.

Mortice being disruptive at an event also is in line with her position as an Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI) Action Fund member. CCI has a reputation for similar political protests at other events, in Cedar Falls.
