Listen to Iowa Students' Message to Minnesota After Vote to Legalize Gay Marriage

Iowa students say they are proud of their neighbors to the north, and as they look at their future they see a more accepting world.

 

Iowa students say they are "so proud" of their neighbors to the north in Minnesota where the state senate voted to legalize gay marriage this week.

The governor is expected to sign the bill into law making Minnesota the 12th state in the nation where gays can legally marry.

"What you've done this week will change the lives of so many people for the better," said Annie Brinich, 21, a University of Iowa senior.

Brinich, who is graduating, said she is looking out at a more open and accepting world. 

Audrey Smith, 21, who is originally from North Carolina, added, "You're state is beautiful, and I am really excited to hear your state is on the right side of history, my state unfortunately is not."

Iowa was the third state in the nation to legalize gay marriage. It came as the result of a 2009 Iowa Supreme Court decision. 

University of Iowa has been recognized over the years for a welcoming environment for gays both as students and in the work force. Brinich is set to participate in a special LGBT graduation celebration this evening called a "Rainbow Graduation.
