Iowa Sen. Shawn Hamerlinck won't release wave of emails

State officials have declined to fill an open records request for the emails Hamerlinck received following controversial comments at the statehouse.

Sen. Shawn Hamerlinck, R-Dixon, won’t release any of the influx of messages he’s received since making controversial remarks to student lobbyists earlier this month.

After telling students earlier this month he doesn't like it "when students actually come here and lobby for funds," a handful of groups have organized to send Hamerlinck more than 1,000 emails criticizing his comments.

The Daily Iowan submitted an open records request for those emails, but state officials say the senate is exempt from such requests.
