Iowa Lawmakers Nearing a Close of Session but a Fight Over Abortion Remains

After a long, hard fought legislative session, Iowa lawmakers have almost reached an agreement on the budget. Still, a disagreement on abortion remains an obstacle.

Radio Iowa reports that a budget deal is likely to be made today, one day before deadline, with a battle over abortion the sole hurdle remaining.

Legislators must still approve the final budget bill which will complete action on the entire budget plan for state government for the fiscal year that begins tomorrow.

But action has been held up as House Republicans have been insisting on new restrictions on taxpayer-funded abortions in limited circumstances, like rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.
