Iowa City Residents May Now File Papers To Run For City Council Seats

Iowa City residents who are interested in filing candidate papers for an open seat on the City Council may now do so. A candidate handbook with information on nomination petitions, campaign finance, and other material, along with information on citizens who have filed papers and whose candidacies have been verified, is available on the City's website at www.icgov.org/?id=1124. Information is also available in the City Clerk's Office in City Hall, 410 E. Washington Street. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline for filing is Thursday, Aug. 29.

To date, only one candidate, Royceann Porter, appears on the web page, although other community members have indicated their intent to run. Individuals are not considered candidates until their papers have been filed with the City.

In the 2013 election, which will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, voters will select residents to fill one District B seat, representing the east side of the City, and two at-large seats. All are for four-year terms. The posts are currently held by Susan Mims and Terry Dickens, both of whom are completing their first terms in office, and Connie Champion, who has served on the Council for four terms, beginning in 1998. Champion has indicated she will not run again.
