Iowa City Fourth of July Fireworks Schedule Features Live Music, Community Picnic

The City of Iowa City has released its info on its 2012 fireworks display.

According to an event release, the City and the Downtown District have planned a fireworks display and "Community Picnic" for Independence Day.

Fireworks will be launched from Hubbard Park near the at roughly 9:45 p.m. on July 4, which is on a Wednesday this year. The fireworks will create a glittering display above the Old Capitol building.

To help celebrate the event, on street and ramp parking will be free all day.

Before the fireworks are launched, the community picnic event will be held along nearby Iowa Avenue as families wait for the fireworks to begin. The picnic will include children's activities at 5:30 p.m. and music at 7 p.m. Visitors can either bring their own picnic dinners or eat out at local restaurants.

For the kids, a giant inflatable circus bounce and slide will be available, as well as the classic radar speed pitch machine to gauge your arm strength. Local blues and funk musician Tony Brown is scheduled to perorm live from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the University of Iowa Pentacrest.

A contest for a $100 community gift card will also be held by the downtown district prior to the fireworks, with the winner being the person who can correctly predict the exact minute the last firework of the evening illuminates the sky.
