Iowa Citian Zach Wahls Speaking at Democratic National Convention

He rose to national fame for a speech supporting the marriage rights of his two mothers at the Iowa House of Representatives.

Now Iowa City native Zach Wahls is going to be speaking on the national political stage.

Wahls, 21, is scheduled to speak to audience of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte on Thursday, the same day that President Barack Obama is scheduled to give his acceptance speech.

Wahls will likely continue a reoccurring mention of gay marriage rights that has been invoked by many speakers so far at the convention, the same convention where the Democratic Party placed supporting gay marriage on its political platform for the first time.

“I’ll be talking about love, respect and what makes a family,” Wahls told The Des Moines Register [Tuesday night].

Two years ago, Wahls became a nationally known figure when his speech to the Iowa House of Representatives as they were debating gay marriage legislation was recorded, posted on YouTube and went viral. It was the , according to YouTube.

Since then he’s withdrawn from the University of Iowa temporarily to support gay rights causes, published a book about having two mothers, been interviewed on The Daily Show, as well as , and has begun a 15-day speaking tour with One Iowa, a Des Moines-based nonprofit LGBT advocacy organization. On the tour, he speaks about his story and the future of same-sex marriage.
