Call for Herky Artists: a Parade is Being Assembled

The call for entries has begun.

From the City of Iowa City

On August 30th, it was announced that the tenth anniversary of the wildly popular 2004 Herky on Parade public statuary project would be marked with a return visit in 2014 as "Herky on Parade 2," a cooperative effort between the University of Iowa Department of Athletics, the Cities of Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty, and the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The next step in the process, the call for entries, is now underway. Artists interested in submitting a proposal for consideration are encouraged to pick up a "Call for Entries Artist Packet" from the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at 900 1st Avenue in Coralville, or download the packet from www.herkyonparade2.com. Packets may also be obtained by contacting Marcia Bollinger at the City of Iowa City at 319/356-5237 or marcia-bollinger@iowa-city.org.

It is expected that there will again be more than 75 Herky statues on display, sponsored by local companies and organizations located throughout the Iowa City and Coralville area starting in May of 2014. As with the inaugural Herky on Parade in 2004, these statues will be decorated by artists who have an eye and talent to transform them into something with visual, conversational, and civic appeal. Iowa artists are particularly encouraged to participate.

Artists who submit a design that is approved and selected by a sponsor will receive a $1,500 stipend, $500 of which will be paid upon execution of the artist's agreement. The remaining $1,000 will be paid upon completion of the statue. The artist's name and hometown will be included on the plaque that is permanently affixed to the base of the statue, along with the title of the sculpture and the name of the sponsor.

The process for submitting a proposal is as follows:
-- Draw and color your Herky design on the outline sketches included in the proposal package. These proposals will be color copied for inclusion in several portfolios that will be created for potential sponsors. Use of materials and attachments other than markers, colored pencils, paints, etc. may not reproduce well.
-- Please attempt to provide a 2-D (flat) sketch.
-- Your final submission should be kept to within the standard 8 1/2" x 11" format if at all possible.
-- Provide a suggested title for the design.
-- Briefly describe the materials that would be used to complete the final project.
-- Original copies of your proposal must be delivered no later than Wednesday, November 27, 2013 by 4 p.m. to the following address:
City of Iowa City
Attn: Marcia Bollinger
410 E. Washington Street
Iowa City, Iowa 52240

All questions regarding the call for entries should be directed to Marcia Bollinger at the City of Iowa City at 319/356-5237 or Marcia-Bollinger@iowa-city.org.
