Semi Accident Causes Traffic Slowdown on Interstate 80 Eastbound, Avoid if Possible

A semi accident has led to a closed exit and slowed traffic between Coralville and Iowa City on Interstate 80

Update 3:20 p.m.: Judging by the views from the traffic cameras the traffic flow on Interstate 80 appears to be improving. The one acception being at the 12th Avenue exit near Coralville.

A series of semi crashes, one requiring HazMaT cleanup, has slowed traffic on Intersate 80 and Highway 6 all afternoon.

The first accident is a semi tanker rollover that has prompted the Coralville Police Department to close the on-ramps to I-80 eastbound at First Avenue (exit 242) and Highway 965 (exit 240). The tanker appears to have been carrying 1,500 gallons of weed killer and the hazardous materials team is on the scene. The Iowa Department of Transportation says eastbound traffic is being detoured at exit 246.

Due to a semi/tanker rollover and corresponding HazMat incident on Interstate 80EB at exit 247, the Coralville Police Department is temporarily closing the on-ramps to I-80EB from 1st Avenue (exit 242) and Highway 965 (exit 240). Please use caution while driving and allow extra time for travel due to detours. CPD will advise when the ramps re-open

The Iowa Department of Transportation has indicated that while west bound traffic on Interstate 80 is open, east bound traffic has slowed, and motorists should expect long delays. You can monitor the traffic jam at the Iowa DOT website here.
