Pool Chemical Spill Causes Disturbance at Oaknoll Retirement Community

After investigation of the spill was completed, hazmat team members made entry to the pool room and mitigated the hazard.

At approximately 1:40 PM on September 20, 2012, the Iowa City Fire Department was called to investigate fumes at the Oaknoll Retirement Community. The fire department responded with an engine, ladder truck, and Battalion Chief.

First-in units were shown to the pool equipment room by maintenance personnel. There was evidence of a moderate spill of pool chemicals. The Johnson County Hazardous Materials Team was dispatched, including off-duty Iowa City team members.

A callback of Iowa City Firefighters was initiated to backfill stations. After investigation of the spill was completed, hazmat team members made entry to the pool room and mitigated the hazard. The spill was contained to the equipment room, there was no evacuation from the building. Units were on scene for 4 hours. There were no injuries.
