Police: Suspicious Package Not A Bomb and Iowa City Was Never in Danger

Iowa City Police say a suspicious packaged discovered downtown at the end of the Iowa Arts Festival was not a bomb.

Police are continuing to investigate. With the assistance from the FBI, officials determined that the suspicious package was not a bomb or incendiary device, and at no time was the safety of the public jeopardized, according to a news release.

The package was located near the intersection of Dubuque Street and Washington Street. The area was cordoned off and the Johnson County Metro Bomb was contacted.

Using a remote control robot the bomb team attempted to secure evidence from the package and identify the contents. The suspicious package was destroyed using a water cannon.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact CrimeStoppers at 358-TIPS (8477). All calls are held in strict confidence and anonymity is guaranteed. Individuals providing information do not have to reveal their identity to collect a reward.
