Police: Seizure Blamed for Single-Vehicle Collision with Utility Pole that Sent Three to Hospital Saturday

An van rollover on Dubuque Street in Iowa City on Saturday evening was reportedly caused by the driver suffering a seizure.


Three people were sent to the hospital but are expected to recover from their injuries after a van collided with a utlity pole after the driver allegedly suffered from a seizure.

According to KCRG, Iowa City Police believe the accident was caused by the driver suffering a seizure while traveling down Dubuque Street.

The rollover happened before 4 p.m. Saturday, along Dubuque St., between Jefferson St. and Market St. in Iowa City. The van rolled on its top with utility poles down surrounding the vehicle. Iowa City Police say five people were in the van at the time of the crash. All were taken toMercy Hospital in Iowa City. Everyone is expected to be OK.

Lee Hermiston of the Iowa City Press-Citizen reported that the collision with a utility pole cased the rollover and that the impact could be heard for blocks away.

Iowa City police and fire and the Johnson County Ambulance Service responded to the crash that happened on southbound Dubuque Street between Market and Jefferson streets. The crash happened around 4 p.m. and the sound of the collision – or the falling utility pole – made a sound that could be heard for several blocks.
