Police: Man Suspected of Burglarizing Hampton Inn Caught While Returning for Free Coffee, Breakfast

The Iowa City man is facing serious misdemeanor theft and felony burglary charges for thefts related to Hampton Inn in Coralville.

The free coffee at Hampton Inn is so good, it almost feels like stealing.

Dwaine Allen Toran, 49, of Iowa City, is accused by Coralville police of returning to the scene of the crime where he was suspected of burglary and theft at Hampton Inn at 1200 First Av., Coralville on 5:13 p.m. on Jan. 8.

Coralville police were called to the scene at the above time and date because Toran was allegedly helping himself to free coffee and breakfast items at the Hampton Inn while not staying there as a guest. It is noted in a complaint that Toran had already been a suspect in a prior burglary at the hotel, and that he had multiple prior theft convictions, including recently on June 13, 2011 and Oct. 27, 2010.

The coffee and breakfast food landed Toran with a second-degree theft (misdemeanor) charge. Toran is accused of felony third-degree burglary for an offense at the same Hampton Inn on Dec. 23, 2012 at 1:45 p.m. Toran allegedly was caught on security footage heading to a construction site at Hampton Inn and piling up specific tools and leaving with them in a bag. To corroborate both charges, many Hampton Inn employees reported seeing Toran on the premises several times at the Inn even though he was not a guest or an employee.

Toran was booked into the Johnson County Jail yesterday at 10:58 a.m. according to online jail records.
