Update: Police Capture 17-Year-Old Accused of Killing His Grandparents in Cedar Rapids

Update, 8:06 p.m.: Cedar Rapids police have captured Isaiah Sweet, the 17-year-old accused of murdering his grandparents over the weekend.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette is reporting that police captured Sweet after a short foot chase along railroad tracks just south of Blairs Ferry Road around 7 p.m. A tip lead to police searching that area.

Update: Police are looking for Isaiah Sweet, 17, of Manchester.

In an Iowa City police report from Sunday, Sweet, of 109 Deann Drive in Manchester, is described as a white male, who is 5-foot-9 and weights 129 pounds.

He was driving a silver 2005 Chevy Avalanche. That was impounded when he was picked up at 2580 Naples Ave. by Iowa City police in a separate incident early Sunday before the bodies were discovered, according to a KWWL report.

Iowa City police are asking the public for help in locating 17-year-old Isaiah Sweet, who faces two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his grandparents in Manchester.

Police apparently had him in custody following the killings, but were unaware of the crimes.

Richard Sweet, 55, and Janet Sweet, 62, with whom the teen had been living, were found dead on Sunday afternoon, according to mulitple media reports. 

A KWWL report suggests, based on phone calls Isaiah Sweet made, that the deaths may have occured on Friday. A neighbor was the last person to see them alive at about 7:30 p.m., Friday, according to police.

According to the criminal complaint, Isaiah made a phone call on Friday evening, telling the other person he had drugged his grandparents and believed they were dead. Police say Isaiah called at least two other people on Saturday, saying he had killed his grandparents and he was on the run.

Early Sunday morning at around 2:30 a.m., and before the bodies were discovered, Isaiah Sweet was picked up by Iowa City police for violating curfew and driving with a suspended license after setting off a business alarm.

He was ultimately released. An Iowa City Press-Citizen report states that police reached Sweet's mother, who lives out-of-state. She gave permission to release Sweet to another adult, who's name they withheld to protect the investigation.

Iowa City Police Sgt. Dave Droll said Sweet may still be in the area, but police are not sure where he is.

"Usually, police don't release this much information if they know where he is," Droll said of an announcement of up to a $1,000 Crimestopper reward for information that leads to his capture. "That is why we are turning to the public for help."

Sweet had been attending West Delaware High School, but dropped out earlier this year.
