Man Charged with Stealing from Dead Woman's Residence Arrested Again for Allegedly Stealing Mink Coat, Other Items

An Iowa City man was arrested on new theft charges stemming from late January.

An Iowa City man, who found himself last summer for allegedly robbing items from a dead woman's residence and threatening her daughter to keep quiet, was arrested again by Iowa City Police.

Michael James Shrock, 23, of 1131 Third Avenue, has been charged with two counts of second-degree theft, second-degree criminal mischief, and third-degree burglary, all felonies, for a series of thefts police accuse him of commiting.

According to criminal complaints, a vehicle was reported stolen on Jan. 30 from a woman's driveway at 1819 H St. This vehicle also contained a $5,000 mink fur coat, an umbrella, a raw piece of red fleece fabric and electronics accessories. According to the complaint, the vehicle was found one block away from Shrock's residence on Feb. 6, and all the other items were allegedly found in his residence, minus the mink coat. Shrock allegedly admitted to police that he had pawned the coat on Feb. 11. The vehicle was also allegedly damaged after it went missing, costing $1,275.95 to repair.

Shrock was also allegedly found with items stolen on Jan. 29 from 1733 F St., and a stolen bicycle was found in the common area of Shrock's apartment. The total amount of the items stolen was $2,000.

Online court records show that Shrock had pleaded guilty as a result of last year's offense, and was on probation. If found guilty of these charges, this would also be a violation of his probation.
