Man Accused of Public Urination Flees Police, Allegedly Claims He Was Afraid of Being Deemed a Sex Offender: Iowa City Police Blotter, May 21

From Iowa City Police Criminal Complaints

An Oxford man was arrested on the morning of May 19 after he allegedly ran from police following his allegedly being caught urinating in public.

According to criminal complaints, at 1:44 a.m., at the 300 BLOCK of S. Gilbert St. police spotted Michael James Lewis, 21, of Oxford allegedly urinating in public. The officers approached Lewis at this time with full lights on and in full uniform. At seeing this, Lewis allegedly fled, even as the officers said "Stop! Police!"

Lewis escaped the officers, who then consulted with a friend of Lewis who called him on his cell phone and advised him to come back, which he then did, according to the complaint.

Lewis told the officers that he knew they were police before he fled but he was worried that they would put him on the sex offender registry for public urination. Lewis allegedly blew a .148 blood-alcohol content and was charged with public intoxication and interference with official acts
