Iowa City Police: Woman Took Man's Car, Became Intoxicated, Crashed into Several Parked Cars

Iowa City police say the influence of a prescription drug likely led to the collision after the Cedar Rapids woman allegedly took the car without permission.

A Cedar Rapids woman is facing misdemeanor charges after taking a man's Honda without his permission and later crashing it into several parked cars.

On Saturday morning at 7:11 a.m., Iowa City Police received a call about a stolen vehicle. The complainant's roommate said he had seen two women taking the man's car keys without his permission while he was asleep. That vehicle was later recovered after a hit and run accident involving several parked vehicles.

According to criminal complaints, police found the vehicle at the 900 block of Lafayette Street. April Marie Spaulding, 18, of Cedar Raids was identified as the driver of the vehicle. She allegedly had droopy eyes, slurred speech, and struggled to answer the officer's questions according to the complaint. Spaulding allegedly told the officers she had taken non-prescription Xanax.
