Iowa City Police: Woman Arrested for Bringing Marijuana Bags into Jail

The woman was charged with a felony for bringing the drugs into the jail despite being warned to reveal them beforehand.


An Iowa City woman was charged with a felony after allegedly bringing several baggies of marijuana into the Johnson County Jail upon her arrest for another crime.

According to an Iowa City Police complaint, Evelyn Maribel Chinchilla, 22, of Iowa City was being booked in the Johnson County Jail for a separate offense on Jan. 19 at 8:20 p.m. 

Police say Chinchilla was warned to reveal any illegal contraband on her person several times before arriving at the jail, but she did not do so. Upon being searched while inside the jail she was found with 14 prepackaged baggies of marijuana, for a total weight of 12.93 grams of the drug.

Chinchilla was charged with possessing illegal contraband in a correctional facility, a Class D felony. She is currently in the Johnson County Jail on a $3,000 bond for possession of a controlled substance. An additional amount for the felony has yet to be added to her bond amount, according to the complaint.
