Iowa City Police: Man Who Robbed Bank Accused of Attempting to Draw Gun on Officers Before Arrest

Police say the Davenport man who was arrested Monday had a bullet in the chamber and went for his weapon before he was apprehended.


The man accused of robbing Hills Bank yesterday and is also accused of attempting to point a loaded 9mm pistol at officers right before his arrest.

According to Iowa City Police criminal complaints, Eric Martin, 34, of Davenport is accused of felony interference with official acts in addition to charges stemming from the robbery of the bank and subsequent pursuit.

Police say that after Martin was cornered and his bike disabled, he reached for the pistol he had allegedly used to commit the robbery as officers were closing in on him. The officers reached Martin and knocked him to the ground before he could get the pistol out, according to the criminal complaint. Officers reported that the gun was allegedly loaded and a bullet was chambered.

Two officers received minor injuries during the scuffle, according to police.

Martin is being held in the Johnson County Jail on $38,000 bond. The most serious charge against him is first-degree robbery, a Class B felony. Martin was also convicted in 1997 for felony theft and other felony offenses, according to the criminal complaint.
