Iowa City Police: Man Sexually Assaulted Woman in Her Home, Exposed Himself to Her

The man who lived nearby made an unwanted sexual advance towards the woman according to a police report.


An Iowa City man is facing misdemeanor sexual assault charges after allegedly grabbing at the pubic area of his female neighbor and exposing himself to her.

According to an Iowa City Police criminal complaint, at 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 23, 2012, a woman arrived home to her address on the 1000 block of Kirkwood Avenue to find a man, Thomas Randall, 42, there waiting in her yard. Randall lived nearby at the time at 1020 Kirkwood Avenue according to the criminal complaint.

Randall went to the woman's door and he was eventually able to persuade her to let him enter her residence. They made their way to the kitchen and as the woman was turned away from him, Randall allegedly grabbed between her legs and "close to her hips near the pubic bone."

The woman rejected his advances, according to the complaint but Randall pursued her into the room, backing her against the wall, grabbing her hair, and attempting to kiss her. He then unzipped his pants and placed his erect penis between her legs, and asked "You want it right here?" and "You want it like this?" according to the complaint. 

The woman managed to push Randall out to the nearby patio, according to the complaint. She also reported later seeing what she thought was Randall masturbating in the vestibule between area between two apartments. The woman then went and reported the incident to her friend and to the police, according to the complaint.

Randall was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 4:42 p.m., according to online jail records, and charged with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse with no injury, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was charged and released for this crime.

Online court records show that Randall was charged for felony burglary and assault causing bodily injury in 2001. He was also charged with third-degree harassment in December of last year and a no-contact order was placed against him.

No listed phone number could be found for Thomas Randall for comment before the writing of this article.
