Iowa City Police: Man Fails to Eat His Way Out of Marijuana Citation

An Iowa City man almost was able to eat up his marijuana supply during a traffic stop, but a trail from his mouth gave him away.


An Iowa City man almost was able to consume the evidence during an Iowa City traffic stop Saturday, but some messy eating gave him away.

According to an Iowa City Police complaint, Steven Dorell Lard, 34, of Iowa City was stopped by officers during a traffic stop at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday.

After the traffic stop, it was discovered by officers that Lard did not have a valid driver's licencse, and the officer approached Lard to talk to him when he allegedly saw a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana in his lap, with a trail that stretched up to his mouth, according to the complaint.

The officer asked Lard to spit the marijuana out and he complied. Lard said allegedly told the officer that he already consumed a bag full of marijuana before the officer had noticed the marijuana remnants, according to the complaint. 

Lard was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor, and drug possession (marijuana) third or subsequent offense, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail on Sunday and released.
