Iowa City Police: Man Arrested after Home Invasion, Sexual Assault

Police say they arrested a man after a woman said she woke up Sunday morning to find him standing near here and performing a sexual act on her without her permission.

Iowa City police arrested a man and charged him with first-degree burglary, a serious felony, after he allegedly broke into a woman's home and sexually assaulted her.

In a news release, police say they responded to a sexual assault call at the 600 Block of S. Dubuque Street at 6:32 a.m. this morning.

The police said they received a report there from a woman who told them that she had been asleep that morning when she awoke to find a male subject standing over her and performing a sex act on her. The woman told police she did not know the man or give him permission to enter her apartment. The woman said the man left the apartment when she started to scream.

After receiving this report, officers immediately began searching the area and were flagged down by a tenant in the 600 Block of  S. Dodge, according to the release. The tenant told officers that a man had just attempted to enter his apartment but fled on foot when he was interrupted.

The officers found out after this that a man fleeing the location of the assault had been arrested for public intoxication. He was identified as Javier Dennys Vazquez-Chavez, 26. After further investigation, the police charged Vazguez-Chavez for the crime.

First-degree Burglary is a class B Felony which is punishable with up to 25 years of imprisonment.
