Iowa City Police Blotter Oct 23: Man Charged With Possession of Synthetic Marijuana, K-2.

An Iowa City man was charged with possession of K-2, a synthetic marijuana on Saturday in Iowa City.
Russell James Barbary, 44, of 1015 Cross Park Ave., was charged with violating a no contact order, second offense domestic abuse assault, assault with display or use of a weapon (all aggravated misdemeanors) and a serious misdemeanor synthetic marijuana possession charge for a series of offenses that allegedly occurred on Oct. 22, starting at 1:23 a.m.

Police say Barbary called police early Saturday morning to report a physical dispute with his "girlfriend's son." When police arrived, they were told by the woman and her son that Barbary had become intoxicated and returned to the above address, violating a no-contact order, and then argued with the woman, eventually grabbing the cloth around her neck and pushing her.
When the woman's son saw this, he allegedly tried to intervene, and Barbary then allegedly grabbed a knife from the kitchen and attacked him with it, giving him several lacerations. Barbary has a prior domestic abuse assault conviction on Nov. 5, 2010. After officers arrived, Barbary gave them consent to search his bike, and they found a plastic bag containing a leafy substance labelled as "Sexy Exotic Herbal Potpourri." According to police, this is a known form of synthetic marijuana, also known as "K-2" or "Spice."

Iowa City police arrested a transient man for allegedly threatening to choke, sexually assault and amputate body parts of another man on his voicemail.
Carlos Olivas, 24, a transient, was charged with first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor, for an offense that allegedly occurred at 8:14 p.m. on Oct. 12.
Police say Olivas called a man several times and left voicemail messages, including one in which police say Olivas started by insulting the man with a string of obsenity.
Police said, Olivas went on to say "I'll (expletive) kill you, (expletive). I'll (expletive) kill you. I'll choke you..." Then police said he went on to make threats referencing sodomizing the man and amputating body parts. The man said he reported the messages to police because he fears for his own safety and for the safety of his family.
