Iowa City Police Blotter Nov. 30: Man Allegedly Threatens to Kill his Wife with a Kitchen Knife

A distraught Iowa City man was charged with first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor, after he allegedly threatened to kill his wife with a kitchen knife.

Brett Douglas Ayers, 49, the man who was charged with the crime was also allegedly the person who called police at 12:54 a.m. on Nov. 26 to tell them that he was going to kill his wife. After police investigated at the residence on East Jefferson Street, they determined that Ayers had threatened to kills his wife with a kitchen knife. Ayers allegedly at first denied that he had made such threats, but later admitted to police that he planned to kill his wife, then himself, as she would suffer without him and he wanted to kill her before committing suicide. According to the criminal complaint, Ayers was arrested and taken to the hospital for evaluation.

An adult male transient in Iowa City didn't get too far after he attempted to flee after stuffing a Hawkeye sweatshirt down his pants that he was allegedly attempting to steal from the Hy-Vee at 1720 Waterfront Drive.

Trinity David Buckingham, 31, address unkwown, was charged with aggravated theft for the incident on Nov. 29 at 2:39 p.m.

According to a criminal complaint, a police officer was called to Hy-Vee at the above address and time for a report of an adult shoplifter in custody. While the officer was parking, Buckingham allegedly attempted to flea, but was soon caught after a short chase by Hy-Vee staff.

Buckingham is accused of stealing from Hy-Vee, putting the Hawkeye sweatshirt down his pants, and a package of pens in his pants pockets. After Buckingham was caught in the act of doing this and taken to the office for questioning, he allegedly gave a false name and was uncooperative, allegedly lunching at the manager who was blocking the exit out of the office, bumping her out of the way. Buckingham then reportedly attempted to flee until he was caught.
