Iowa City Police Arrive At Residence for Unrelated Investigation, End Up Arresting Tenant for Marijuana Dealing

Iowa City Police say they arrived at a residence to talk about another investigation (very early in the morning) when they allegedly saw the tenant attempting to hide something suspicious.

An Iowa City man is facing felony drug dealing charges after police allegedly came upon his marijuana dealing operation by accident while coming to the residence for an unrelated investigation.

According to Iowa City Police criminal complaints, police were looking to talk to Ricky George Garner, 20, about the investigation on Nov. 19 when they knocked on his apartment door at 1006 Oakcrest St. at 3:30 a.m. When the one officer knocked, other officers reportedly witnessed Garner attempting to hide a bong located near a television.

As the police spoke with Garner at the door, they told him they smelled a strong odor of marijuana. Garner was then "uncooperative" with officers, according to the complaint, and they secured a warrant to search the residence.
