Iowa City Firefighter Hospitalized After Responding to Apartment Fire

The firefighter was treated and released after receiving an injury from the Sunday morning fire. No other injuries were reported.

An Iowa City firefighter was treated and released for injuries at a local hospital after responding to a fire this morning at 320 S. Dubuque Street.

According to a release from the Iowa City Fire Department, six fire units and 20 Iowa City firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at the Capitol House Apartments building on Dubuque Street at 2:56 a.m. Sunday morning.

While firefighters were en route, police units on the scene reportedly saw smoke coming out of the third floor window. According to the release, firefighters entered the building and headed to the fire's origin on the third floor, evacuating the building's occupants. Once the apartment was reached, a small fire was located on and next to a table in the living room of the apartment. The firefighters quickly extinguished the fire using pressurized water extinguishers.

The injured firefighter was treated at Mercy Hospital and released.

No residents were found inside the apartment at the time, but a caged bird and a dog were saved from the apartment, according to the release. The fire was extinguished at 3:17 a.m. and all units had left the scene by 4:38 a.m.

All fire, water and smoke damage was limited to the apartment where the fire started, according to the release. Damages are estimated at $2,500. One resident of the apartment was able to relocate with relatives.

ICFD was assisted with the fire by the Iowa City Police, Johnson County Ambulance Service and Mid-America Energy.
