OBITUARY: William A. Haggerty

William A. Haggerty, age 72, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at his home in Iowa City, Iowa, after a courageous battle with cancer. 

A visitation will be held at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home -- 24021 Royal Worlington Drive, Naperville, Illinois, on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 3- 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic church in Durand, Illinois. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Durand.

Bill was born on July 24, 1941 in Rockford, Illinois, the son of Francis "Ted" and Bernice (Dailey) Haggerty. He grew up in Durand and attended Durand High School. He loved playing baseball and his teams won many championships.

After high school, he attended the University of Illinois where he received a degree in Business and was a proud brother of the Theta Chi Fraternity. He then went on to receive an MBA degree from Northern Illinois University. Bill joined the U.S. Army in 1964 and was stationed in Germany where he worked for N.A.T.O. until 1966. 

Bill spent most of his career with The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad where he held many executive positions in operations, sales and marketing. In 1995, he joined the Iowa Interstate Railroad and moved from Naperville, Illinois to Iowa City. 

Bill was an avid reader, history buff and sports fan. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Bill is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy (Thieben) of Iowa City, Iowa; his three daughters, Cara (Steve) Brock of Brentwood, Tennessee, Christina (Mark) Hayes of Iowa City, Cathy (Trevor) Dick of Aurora, Illinois; and his grandchildren, Jake and Jaden Brock and Morgan and Macy Dick. Bill is also survived by his sister, Elaine (Mike) Threlkeld of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and three nieces, Meredith (Steve) Millstone, Melissa Threlkeld and Maureen (Lucas) Moore. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the William A. Haggerty Memorial Fund -- which will support youth athletic programs for Durand schools and local youth athletic organizations. (William A. Haggerty Memorial Fund -- Durand State Bank, P.O. Box 537, Durand, Illinois 61024).
