OBITUARY: Richard M. Nelson

Richard M Nelson, 73, of Davenport, died suddenly on Saturday, June 14th, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 21st at Christ United Methodist Church -- at Pine Street and 41st Street -- in Davenport. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time. A luncheon will follow the service. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Christ United Methodist Church for the purpose of The Joseph School in Haiti.

Richard was born on January 20th, 1941, in Clearfield, Iowa, the son of Harley W. and Myrtha McMath Nelson. On December 30th, 1959, he married Maribeth Buffington. In 1959, Richard graduated from Winfield High School. In 1960, he graduated from the University of Iowa - School of X-Ray, and in 1974 graduated from the University of Iowa in Nuclear Medicine. He and his wife owned and operated Nelson Mobile X-Ray until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Davenport, Iowa.

Richard enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, trapping, ham radio operating, woodworking, remodeling his homes, charcuterie, bread making, gardening, bee keeping, bird watching and traveling. He was famous for his toffee and his salami making. He enjoyed traveling in the RV with his wife, especially their summer trips to Alaska for salmon fishing.

He will be missed by many, his wife; his four children: Jananne and her husband George of Springfield, Missouri, Jacqueline of North Liberty, Iowa, Richard W. of Las Vegas, and Ryan and his wife Mihaela, who are traveling around the globe; his eight grandchildren, Drew, Sean and Lauren Allmeyer, Tapoa Nelson and Michael, Tara, Tiffany and Alissa Nelson; his sister, Sandy and her husband Larry and his brother, Robert; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his father and his mother.
