OBITUARY: Richard "Dick" J. Malcolm

Richard “Dick” J. Malcolm, 78, died Thursday, March 20, 2014 following a sudden illness. 

A Time of Remembrance will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 26th at Lensing's Oak Hill -- 210 Holiday Road, Coralville, with Reverend Mark Pries officiating. The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Friends are welcome to celebrate the life of Dicky Jim at Brown Deer Golf Course following the service.

Dick was born November 8, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of George and Madeline Brown Malcolm. He was raised in Philadelphia until the family moved to Moline, Illinois in 1941. Dick was a graduate of Moline High School and attended Wentworth Military Academy and the University of Iowa, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. On August 24, 1957, Dick married Barbara Fritz at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moline.

Dick owned Malcolm Jewelers in downtown Iowa City and Sycamore Mall from 1959 to 1989. From 1989 until his retirement in 1999, he managed Kay’s Jewelers. 

He was the Sigma Nu Advisor, University of Iowa Chapter, for 25 years, served on the board of the Iowa City Jaycees, was a charter member and past president of Sunrise Optimists, past board member of the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Board of Adjustment. Dick was an avid Hawkeye fan and past president of the Johnson County I-Club.

Dick loved to golf, fish, camp and boat. He enjoyed time spent traveling and dancing with the love his life -- most important to Dick was his family.

Survivors include his loving wife, Barb of Coralville and their three children, Beth Ann (Darrell) Wahe of Danville, Iowa, Richard (Liz) Malcolm, Jr. of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida and George Malcom of Lakewood, Colorado; two grandsons, Chris Allen of Washington, D.C. and Kent Allen of Fort Campbell, Kentucky; his sister-in-law, Lou Malcolm of Moline and his brother-in-law, Don (Linda) Fritz of Thousand Oaks, California; and nephews, Todd Malcolm and Scott Fritz.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George and nephew Marc Malcolm.
