OBITUARY: Norbert Anthony Wagner

Norbert Wagner, 92, died peacefully in his sleep at Pioneer Village Care Center in Lone Tree Saturday, April 5th.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 10th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marquette Council #842 Knights of Columbus or to the Regina Foundation.

Norb was born in Ossian, Iowa on July 13, 1921, the son of Edward and Alma Wagner. In May 3, 1952, Norb married Emily Swenka at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. He attended the University of Iowa and received an engineering degree from the Dunwoode Institute in Minneapolis. 

Norb and Emily moved to Iowa City in 1962 where they owned and operated Wagner -Pontiac-Jeep Inc. for over 35 years. He took pride in their dealerships service department, which received many awards throughout the years. Norb and Emily enjoyed business conventions which took them too many interesting places including trips to Hawaii, Canada and the Bahamas.

Norb was very community and civic minded. He was a member at at St. Mary’s Church where he was an usher and had served on the parish council. He had served on the Regina School Board and helped raise funds for numerous projects. Norb was a member of the Marquette Council #842 of the Knights of Columbus and the Fourth Degree Bishop Cosgrove Assembly. He assisted in securing the land for Council 842’s home on American Legion Rd.

Throughout the years Norb was active in Regina High School activities including photographing games for football and other sports. He kept in touch with many friends by using his computer.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Emily and their three children, Mark Wagner of Iowa City, Barb Wagner of Iowa City and Jim (Deana) Wagner of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Brian, Erin, Courtney and Nicole; three great- grandchildren; his sister, Alice Shea of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Leona Evans and Helen Swenka; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Linus.
