OBITUARY: Jonathan T. Petty

Jonathan T. Petty, 61, died peacefully Friday, April 11th at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by his family and friends.

A memorial service and reception will be held after Easter with the time and date to be announced. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Foundation, the American Diabetes Association or to Friends Forever Humane Society in Freeport, Illinois.

Jonathan was born April 17, 1952 in Salisbury, North Carolina, the son of Theodore and Annie Belle Wade Petty. He graduated from high school in Jacksonville, Florida and received his bachelors degree in accounting from Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1971 to 1973. On December 28, 1974, he married Helene Reed in Crystal River, Florida. They moved to Coralville in 1989.

Jon was employed by the Iowa Donor Network as a computer specialist, retiring in 2002, prior to that he was employed by the University of Florida.He was a member of First Christian Church. Jon was a computer wiz and collected science fiction novels and Hokey Japanese and science fiction movies.

He is survived by his loving wife Helene and their daughter, Malene Petty, PharmD; his siblings, Joel Petty, Jimmy Petty, Jeffrey Petty and Barbara Petty, all of Jacksonville, Florida; sister-in-law, Jane Buck of Cedar Falls; nieces and nephews, Brittany and Brianna Combs, Donald Combs IV, Cheryl Buck and Wayne Buck.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jeannie Petty; in-laws, Robert and Louise Reed; and brother-in-law, Dennis Buck.
