OBITUARY: John "Jack" A. Grady

John “Jack” A. Grady, 91, of Iowa City, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 8th at Lantern Park Care Center surrounded by family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 12th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with The Very Reverend Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, where the Knights of Columbus will recite a rosary at 6:30 p.m. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Church or Iowa City Hospice.

Jack was born February 28, 1923 in Iowa City, the son of John H. and Stella Gerber Grady. He was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School and received his bachelor’s degree in 1951 from the University of Iowa. Jack entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the 38th Combat Engineer Regiment. The 38th landed on Utah Beach, Normandy as part of the 1st Engineer Special Brigade and were engaged in the assault of the Normandy Beaches on D-Day. Jack served in England, France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany during World War II.

On June 21, 1947, Jack married Virginia Kelly at St. Patrick’s Church.

Jack owned and operated Kelly Heating for over 50 years.

Jack was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, VFW Post #3943, Iowa City Elks Club, Knights of Columbus - Council #842 and Bishop Cosgrove Assembly 4th degree, the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Johnson County I-Club.

Jack represented that truly “Great Generation” that fought a war, built a nation, raised their families, and provided a life for us better than he had -- we all should do a better job of emulating them. We love you and will miss you. Rest In Peace.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Craig Champion, Iowa City Hospice and the staff at Lantern Park Care Center for their wonderful care and support.

Jack is survived by his wife Virginia and their four children: Pat (Margo) Grady and Kathy (Edward) Saehler, both of Iowa City, Jim (Leslie) Grady of Boulder, Colorado and Tim (Mila) Grady of Iowa City; eleven grandchildren: Tim Saehler, Shannon (Nile) Hicks, Jenny (Andrew) Paul, Dan Grady, Joe Grady, Erin Grady, Alison Grady, Peter Grady, Claire Grady, Ben Grady and Maria Grady; two great-grandchildren, Grady Hicks and Quinn Hicks. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bob.
