OBITUARY: Harold Eugene Brawner

Harold Eugene Brawner, 86, of 2801 Hwy 6 East, Iowa City, died Monday morning, July 21, 2014, suddenly at his home.

A celebration of Harold’s life will be held on Friday, July 25th, 2014, from 2-4 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Solon Veterans Memorial Fund, the Korean War Veterans Memorial Fund or the Harold Brawner Memorial Fund.

Harold E. Brawner was born December 24, 1928, to Clarence and May (Snider) Brawner. He was raised and educated in Iowa City, graduating from City High in 1946. He was united in marriage to Virginia (Crain) Brawner on June 6, 1953, in Iowa City where they made their home together until her passing in 2003.

Harold served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1952-1953, serving in C Company of the 286th Engineer Combat Battalion in forward combat theater during the Korean War in direct support of combat operations. He rose to the rank of Corporal, earning the Good Conduct Medal, the United Nations Campaign Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation before being honorably discharged from service in early 1953.

Following his military service, Harold worked for Linder Tire in Iowa City before opening Brawner Texaco in the late 50’s. He also owned the Dairy Queen in Iowa City for several years and worked at AAA Insurance in Iowa City for over 20 years, retiring from there in the late 1990’s after a long and stellar career.

Harold loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, playing golf and Hi Point and Pleasant Valley in Iowa City and always had a good story to tell as well as an indomitable cheery attitude about life.

Harold is survived by his sisters-in-law: Jane Strub, Louise Aicher and Ann Brawner, all of Iowa City, and Patricia Crain of Tuscon, Arizona; as well as scores of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and May; two brothers, Richard and Gene; and his loving wife of 49 years, Virginia.
